What’s the best way to dry out albums, CDs,
and 8-tracks that were stored in
boxes and were left in less than an inch of standing water for a day?
Probably not like this, but its not like they’r e gonna get any better, condition wise.
Also, why does water have to wick its way up paper products? I could stand with a wet edge or two, but 1/4 of all the albums look like this?
HAHA THAT ALBUM TITLE
I would take solace that the brand new in factory shrink wrap ones would be okay, but that has been shown NOT to be the case. The plastic wrapped ones have been the WORST AFFECTED by far. Somehow the water got inside and the ENTIRE liner is soaked.
I still have 6 more of these boxes to go through.
The good news about this is that insurance is covering it.
Bad news is I still have drywall and wood panelling to take down and add to the pile of wet crap.

Fuck, whatever you do keep the records on their side. Take them out of the sleeves and let them dry so they don’t get moldy. The album covers are kinda fooked though, might try ironing them to straighten them out again.
*by side I mean don’t store them flat.

I’d try wax/parchment paper in b etween each layer? It may take time to dry, but at least shouldn’t stick together (Costco for buying bulk size, if you do ).

Separate everything, stand it up, and put it in a small room with a dehumidifier cranked up. If you don’t have a dehumidifier, then at least an oscillating fan or something to keep dry-ish air moving around between them. Get all the discs and vinyl out of there first before the paper leaves particles all over them.
LOL Jackson Browne.

They’re in a dehumidified room, with an additional fan a’ blowing. There’s already wet paper stuck to the discs, so at this point I figured unless there’s a rare million dollar album in there, I’m not too concerned with warpage from lying them flat.

Hmm, mold. Haven’t gotten there yet, but they were stored on their ends when they got wet, they’re just all stuck to each other and many are in plastic so I just laid them there to dry a bit.
The covers are most definitely fookered, so I wasn’t too concerned about saving the discs from warpage.

Ouch my dad lost his collection to water damage. At least you caught it. His were totalled by the time he realized it. Good luck!

Thanks. This was my father in law’s collection, and I had hoped to honor his memory by taking a bit better care of them than this.
But the past is the past, what’s done is done. I’m just glad we only lost maybe 1/8 of everything.

That might only work with the imports.... Or Yoko Ono.

In professional restorations they freeze the wet stuff then lower the ambient pressure until the water sublimes (direct solid to gas without becoming liquid).
There isn’t an easy way to do that.
Desiccants and dehumidifiers are probably the best easy way to do it.

Cheapest answer, plastic cutlery to prop up LP’s.
Open CD and stand books and case up partially open with disc leaning so it keeps booklet from blowing away
8-Tracks, I dunno, stand em up so the water drains out the bottom

For casettes and 8 tracks, remove the outer casing and let the tape sit in a neutral absorbant medium. Records, try to let the leaves dry out in the air. Prop them open with a clothes pin or something small.
